TD of Central Arizona Gives the International Secretariat a Lesson in Sponsorship

And Learns its own lessons in community cooperation The International Secretariat meets face-to-face three times a year, once during the Annual Assembly and two other times as guests of a local secretariat. Suzette Coggins, international representative for Tres Dias of Central Arizona began galvanizing interest four months in advance of the community’s hosting of a Secretariat meeting November 2nd  to 4th. Before the first guest arrived, 38 community volunteers had put plans in place for transportation, housing, food, musicians, worship experiences and  hundreds of minor details that made the meetings flow without so much as a microphone malfunction.  The cooperate effort paid off in community spirit.  At the Saturday evening Victory Secuela, community members filled the Bethany Bible Church Chapel building to capacity, the 200 plus in attendance being the largest gathering many could remember. The formal meetings gave Arizona member Peggy Shortridge opportunity to showcase the community’s unique on-line sponsorship training program. Peggy is a college instructor with more than 20 years’ experience teaching in the community college system. She is expert in the use of learning management systems (LMS), web applications that allow instructors to post content, students to complete homework and take tests, and instructors to grade tests. The sponsorship course uses Canvas Free for Teachers, an LMS that has a phone app and can handle a large number of students. Written with a whimsical sense of humor and an in-depth understanding of what it means to be a sponsor, the program takes the learner through six modules, from preparing to be a sponsor to the sponsor’s responsibilities during the candidate’s fourth day. Each module ends with a short, multiple-choice quiz that gives instant feedback on right answers and, if the learner makes a wrong choice, a clear explanation of why that answer is incorrect. The Arizona secretariat mandates that every sponsor, first timers and seasoned veterans, must complete the course at least once. “We tend to sponsor in the same manner we were sponsored,” Peggy explains, “and this requirement ensures that everyone has been exposed to the most effective practices.” The program has been widely praised within the Central Arizona community. The International Secretariat is reviewing the program as a possible base for an enhanced sponsorship training program that could be used by all communities. Although some of the practices in the program are distinctive to Central Arizona, the program is solidly based on the Essentials and can be modified for other communities. Try it for yourself.
